Half-model Ring-net Fishing Boat, Tern, BA725, 1946

Image subject to copyright »

Half-model of varnished wood made in 1946 by Boatbuilder J.N. Miller in St Monans.

Although this model has a specific name and number, around 48 boats were made from this design. Miller often re-used boat plans, adding or changing details by eye if the customer wished. The firm built hundreds of boats in this way and sold them all over Scotland before changing to steel in 1985.

Half-models like this were used by boatbuilders to try out new designs for fishing boats and to show to customers. They would then measure the model and make a line drawing. The full-size boat would be built from the drawing. The shape required depended on the type of fishing for which it would be used.
